Early Life
Born in Humble, Texas, Dorenbos was raised in Woodinville, Washington. At the age of 12, his life changed dramatically when his mother, Kathy, was murdered by his father, Alan, a software specialist, on August 2, 1992. Alan Dorenbos was convicted of second-degree murder and sentenced to 13 years and eight months in prison. Following the tragedy, Jonathan was placed in foster care before being adopted by his aunt and uncle, Susan and Steve Hindman. To cope with the trauma, he turned to magic as a source of comfort and healing.
Dorenbos attended Pacifica High School in Garden Grove, California, where he lettered in football, basketball, hockey, and baseball, earning all-league honors in football and baseball. He was also an honor-roll student and made the dean’s list. He began his college education at Golden West College in Huntington Beach, California. During his freshman year, his best friend, Paul Tessier—then attending UTEP—called and invited him to try out as a long snapper for the UTEP Miners football team, which launched his collegiate football career.
