Early Life
John Stamos was born on August 19, 1963, in Cypress, California, to William “Bill” Stamos, a Greek-American restaurateur whose family hailed from Kakouri in Arcadia, and Loretta (née Phillips). His family’s original surname was Stamatopoulos (Greek: Σταματόπουλος). As a teen, Stamos worked in his father’s restaurants and had a job flipping burgers in the Orange County area. He attended John F. Kennedy High School, where he played in the school’s marching band.
At 15, he attended his first Beach Boys concert—an experience that later led to him touring with the legendary band. Supported by his parents in his desire to pursue acting, Stamos initially planned to enroll at Cypress College in 1981 but decided to delay his education to focus on acting. Just three weeks after making that decision, he landed his breakout role on General Hospital.
