Born in Affton, Missouri, John Goodman was the son of postal worker Leslie Francis Goodman, who died when John was just two, and Virginia Roos, who worked various jobs including waitressing and laundry to support the family. John grew up with an older brother, Leslie, and a younger sister, Elisabeth. He has English, German, and Welsh ancestry and was raised in the Southern Baptist faith. After his father’s death, Goodman described his childhood as lonely and introverted.
He found solace in Boy Scouts and later in mentors such as Scout leaders and acting coaches, who served as father figures. His brother, who returned from college to help raise him and his sister, introduced John to both comedy and jazz music. At Affton High School, Goodman played football and took part in theater. Although he received a football scholarship to Missouri State University (formerly Southwest Missouri State), an ACL injury ended his football ambitions.
