Bridges was born on December 4, 1949, in Los Angeles, California, to actor Lloyd Bridges (1913–1998) and actress and writer Dorothy Bridges (née Simpson; 1915–2009). He has three siblings: older brother Beau Bridges (born December 9, 1941), who is also an actor; younger sister Lucinda; and brother Garrett, who tragically passed away from sudden infant death syndrome in 1948. His maternal grandfather was an immigrant from Liverpool, England.
Raised in the Holmby Hills area of Los Angeles, Bridges developed a close bond with his brother Beau, who often stepped in as a father figure when their father was busy with work. He graduated from University High School in 1967 and, at the age of 17, toured with his father in a stage production of Anniversary Waltz. Afterward, he moved to New York City to study acting at the Herbert Berghof Studio. Additionally, Bridges served in the United States Coast Guard Reserve from 1967 to 1975 as a boatswain’s mate, achieving the rank of Boatswain’s Mate Second Class.
