James Douglas Muir Leno born April 28, 1950 is a prominent American television host, comedian, and writer. After years of performing stand-up comedy, he became the host of NBC’s The Tonight Show from 1992 until 2009, when Conan O’Brien took over. In September 2009, Leno launched The Jay Leno Show, a primetime talk show airing weeknights at 10:00 p.m. ET on NBC.

That same year, Leno was inducted into the Television Hall of Fame. From 2014 to 2022, he hosted Jay Leno’s Garage and revived You Bet Your Life from 2021 to 2023. Leno also writes a regular column for Popular Mechanics, where he shares insights on his extensive car collection and offers automotive advice. Leno was born on April 28, 1950, in New Rochelle, New York. His mother, Catherine 1911–1993, was a homemaker originally from Greenock, Scotland, who moved to the United States at age 11. His father, Angelo (1910–1994), an insurance salesman, was born in New York to parents who immigrated from Flumeri, Campania, Italy. Leno grew up in Andover, Massachusetts, and graduated from Andover High School. He later earned a bachelor’s degree in speech therapy from Emerson College in Boston, where he founded a comedy club in 1973. His older brother, Patrick (May 12, 1940 – October 6, 2002), was a Vietnam War veteran who went on to become an attorney.
