Graber was born in 1991 in Tulsa, Oklahoma, to a Chinese mother, an acupuncturist, and a Swiss father, a mathematics teacher. Her mother, who grew up in China during the Cultural Revolution before emigrating to the United States in the 1980s, named her “Lantian” (meaning “blue sky” in Mandarin) to symbolize the hope for her to have “boundless freedom.” Graber attended the University of Pennsylvania starting in 2009, where she graduated with a BSc in Science, Technology, and Society. During her senior year, she won a grant to co-found a student time bank program.

Graber began her career in 2015 as a software engineer for SkuChain in Mountain View, California. She later worked in Moses Lake, Washington, assembling bitcoin mining equipment.
