Early life

Bardem was born March 1, 1969, in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Canary Islands, Spain. His mother, Pilar Bardem (1939-2021), was an actress, while his father, José Carlos Encinas Doussinague (1931-1995), was the son of a cattle rancher. According to Pilar’s recollections, José possessed a “capricious and violent will,” he shot up the front door. He changed occupations over ten times, resulting in evictions and children going hungry. Shortly after Javier was born, the two split. His mother raised him and his older siblings, Carlos and Mónica, alone (another sibling died shortly after birth), both of whom have followed acting careers. His father died from leukemia in 1995.

Bardem is descended from a long line of filmmakers and actors who have influenced Spanish cinema since its inception. He is the grandson of actors Rafael Bardem and Matilde Muñoz Sampedro (sister of Mercedes and Guadalupe) and nephew of playwright and director Juan Antonio Bardem. On the latter’s side, he is a cousin to filmmaker Miguel Bardem. He comes from a political background, as his uncle, Juan Antonio, was imprisoned by the Franco administration for his anti-fascist films. Bardem was raised in the Roman Catholic faith by his grandmother.

Career

When Bardem was 21, he landed a modest role in his first major motion feature, The Ages of Lulu, alongside his mother, Pilar Bardem. He also played minor roles in Amo tu camarica and High Heels. Bigas Luna, the director of Lulu, was so impressed that he gave him the lead male character in his second film, Jamón Jamón, in 1992, in which Bardem played an aspiring underwear model and bull fighter. The picture, which also starred his eventual wife Penélope Cruz, was a huge international hit. Bardem appeared in Sancho Gracia’s Huidos and in Bigas Luna’s subsequent film Golden Balls (1993).

Bardem’s brilliance was well recognized in the English-speaking world. In 1997, John Malkovich approached him, then 27 years old, for an English-language job, but the Spanish actor declined due to his low English skills. In Álex de la Iglesia’s Perdita Durango, he played a bank robber who practices santería. This was his first English-language role.
