Jamie Dimon Early Life

Born in New York City, Dimon grew up in Jackson Heights, Queens. He is one of three sons of Theodore and Themis Dimon, who had Greek heritage. His paternal grandfather, a Greek immigrant, worked as a banker in Smyrna and Athens before changing the family name from Papademetriou to Dimon. Dimon has two brothers: an older brother, Peter, and a fraternal twin, Ted. Both his father and grandfather were stockbrokers at Shearson. Dimon attended the Browning School and later majored in psychology and economics at Tufts University, graduating summa cum laude. At Tufts, he wrote a paper on Shearson’s mergers, which his mother sent to Sandy Weill. Impressed by the paper, Weill hired Dimon to work at Shearson during a summer break.

After graduation, Dimon worked in management consulting at Boston Consulting Group for two years before attending Harvard Business School. During a summer at Harvard, he worked at Goldman Sachs. He graduated in 1982 with an MBA, earning distinction as a Baker Scholar. Afterward, Sandy Weill convinced him to decline offers from top investment banks like Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley, and Lehman Brothers to join American Express, where Weill promised Dimon a fulfilling career despite a lower salary than the banks. Dimon’s father, Theodore, was an executive vice president at American Express.
