Born in Atlanta, Georgia, Arnold moved to Denton, Texas at the age of 10 and attended John H. Guyer High School. He is of Croatian descent on his maternal side. During his freshman and sophomore years, Arnold served primarily as the backup to future Texas A&M quarterback Eli Stowers. However, as a junior, he had a breakout season, passing for 3,921 yards and 34 touchdowns, while also rushing for 659 yards and 12 touchdowns. Initially rated as a four-star recruit, Arnold ultimately received 25 scholarship offers before committing to play for Oklahoma.
