He first gained prominence as one half of the comedy duo Fry and Laurie alongside Stephen Fry. Early Life
Laurie was born on 11 June 1959 in the Blackbird Leys area of Oxford, the youngest of four children of Patricia (née Laidlaw) and William George Ranald Mundell “Ran” Laurie. His father, a physician, won an Olympic gold medal in rowing at the 1948 London Games. Laurie has one brother, Charles, and two sisters, Susan and Janet. He had a difficult relationship with his mother, whom he described as emotionally distant and “Presbyterian by character.”
She passed away from motor neurone disease in 1989, with Laurie’s father providing care during her final years. Laurie has spoken fondly of his father, calling him “the sweetest man in the whole world.” Although his family had Scottish roots and attended St Columba’s Presbyterian Church in Oxford, Laurie noted that religion did not play a significant role in his upbringing. Instead, the household emphasized a restrained, almost skeptical view of pleasure. Reflecting on this, he said, “Pleasure was treated with great suspicion… even the earning of it didn’t really justify it.”
