Born and raised in Bergisch Gladbach, Germany, near Cologne, Klum is the daughter of Erna Klum, a hairdresser, and Günther Klum, a cosmetics company executive. Encouraged by a friend, Klum entered a national modeling competition called Model 92, where she was chosen as the winner out of 25,000 contestants on April 29, 1992. This victory earned her a $300,000 modeling contract from Thomas Zeumer, CEO of Metropolitan Models New York.
