Goldie Hawn Early Life

Goldie Hawn was born in Washington, D.C., to Laura (née Steinhoff), a jewelry shop and dance school owner, and Edward Rutledge Hawn, a musician and conductor with ancestry linked to Edward Rutledge, the youngest signer of the Declaration of Independence. She was named after her maternal aunt and has one sister, entertainment publicist Patti Hawn. Her brother, Edward Jr., tragically passed away in infancy before Patti was conceived, a fact that the sisters were unaware of as they grew up.

Hawn’s father, a Presbyterian of German and English descent, and her mother, a Jewish woman with Hungarian immigrant roots, raised her in a Jewish household in Takoma Park, Maryland. She attended Montgomery Blair High School in Silver Spring, Maryland. From a young age, Hawn showed a passion for dance, beginning ballet and tap lessons at age three. She was part of the corps de ballet in the Ballets Russes de Monte Carlo production of The Nutcracker in 1955. Hawn made her stage debut in 1964, playing Juliet in a production of Romeo and Juliet at the Virginia Shakespeare Festival.

In 1964, after dropping out of American University, where she had been majoring in drama, Hawn opened and ran a ballet school. She later began her professional dancing career, performing in the Can-Can production at the Texas Pavilion of the New York World’s Fair. A year later, she became a go-go dancer in New York City and at the Peppermint Box in New Jersey.
