His younger brother, Dale, was also selected for New Zealand’s squad for the 2018 Under-19 Cricket World Cup. Born in South Africa, Phillips moved to New Zealand at the age of five and attended Sacred Heart College, where he developed his cricketing skills. He made his List A debut on January 24, 2015, during the Ford Trophy. His Twenty20 debut came on December 4, 2016, in the Super Smash against the Otago Volts, where he scored 55 runs off 32 balls.
