Early Life and Career Beginnings
Nayvadius DeMun Wilburn was born on November 20, 1983, in Atlanta, Georgia, and attended Columbia High School in Decatur. At the age of sixteen, around 1999 or 2000, he was shot in the hand and robbed—an experience he later described as a life-changing moment. Future started his music career under the name “Meathead” as part of the Georgia-based collective Dungeon Family. He joined through the influence of his cousin, Rico Wade (1972–2024), a member of the production team Organized Noize and operator of the famed “Dungeon” studio in East Point, Georgia.
Within the Dungeon Family, Future performed with a smaller group called “Da Connect,” where fellow member G-Rock gave him the nickname “The Future.” The group recorded one album, Rico Wade Presents: Da Connect, intended for release in 2003 but ultimately shelved. Future’s solo track on the album, “Belly of da Beast,” is considered his first official song. Unlike his later work, he did not use Auto-Tune during this early period.
