Early life

Edward Lachman was born into a Jewish family in Morristown, New Jersey, the son of Rosabel (Roth) and Edward Lachman, a movie theater distributor and owner. He attended Harvard University, studied at the University of Tours in France, and later earned a BFA in painting from Ohio University. Lachman has a daughter, Bella Lachman (born 2005), who currently resides in Amsterdam.

Career

In 1989, Lachman co-directed a segment of the anthology film Imagining America.  2002, he co-directed the provocative Ken Park alongside Larry Clark. In 2013, Lachman worked with the French electronic duo Daft Punk, producing a series of videos for their album Random Access Memories.

Awards and Honors

Lachman received the Club Ribbon at the American Film Festival and an Academy Award nomination in 1974 for Christo’s Valley Curtain. In 1976, he earned awards from the Cannes International Film Festival, Berlin International Film Festival, and New York Film Festival for Stroszek and La Soufrière—Warten auf eine unausweichliche Katastrophe (also known as La Soufrière).

In 1984, Lachman won the Feature Film Prize at the German Film Festival and received awards from the Cannes International Film Festival, Berlin International Film Festival, and New York Film Festival for Lightning over Water. He also received awards from the Cannes International Film Festival, Venice International Film Festival, Berlin International Film Festival, and New York Film Festival for Say Amen, Somebody in 1982.
