Dushan Hemantha Early Life
Hemantha was introduced to cricket by his father, Sujith Hemantha, who is also a cricket coach. His father recognized his passion for the sport when he was just seven years old. Initially, Hemantha showed potential as an off-spinner, but his father encouraged him to focus on leg-spin, believing it would enhance his accuracy and wicket-taking ability.
He was later persuaded by Sajith Jayalal, the national athletic coach at the time, to join the junior national athletics team. Though he hesitated at first, Hemantha eventually accepted the offer and participated in the South Asian Junior Athletics Championships, where he won a bronze medal in the men’s 1500m race. Alongside his athletic pursuits, he continued to hone his cricket skills.
Hemantha completed his secondary education at St. Peter’s College, where he captained the under-19 cricket team during the 2012–13 season and earned the best captain’s award at the all-island schools cricket awards. He gained recognition during his school years under the guidance of coaches L. H. Sunil and Keerthi Gunaratne.
