Dimple Kapadia was born on June 8, 1957, in Bombay to Chunibhai Kapadia, a prosperous Gujarati businessman, and his wife Bitti, known as “Betty.” Chunibhai came from a wealthy Ismaili Khoja family, while Bitti was a practicing Ismaili. As an infant, Kapadia was given the name Ameena, meaning “honest” or “trustworthy,” by Aga Khan III, although she was never commonly referred to by this name. She is the eldest of four siblings, all of whom have passed away, including sisters Simple (who also acted) and Reem, and a brother named Suhail.
Growing up in Santacruz, a suburb of Bombay, Kapadia attended St. Joseph’s Convent High School. She described her childhood as one where she matured quickly and often befriended older children. Her father faced disapproval from his conservative family after she was cast in Bobby. At the age of 15, Kapadia married Rajesh Khanna, who was 30 at the time, after a brief courtship.
