Richard Wayne Van Dyke was born in West Plains, Missouri, on December 13, 1925, to Hazel Victoria (née McCord), a stenographer, and Loren Wayne “Cookie” Van Dyke, a salesman. He grew up in Danville, Illinois, and is the older brother of actor Jerry Van Dyke, who appeared alongside him on The Dick Van Dyke Show. Van Dyke’s surname is of Dutch origin, though he also has English, Irish, and Scottish roots. His family traces its lineage to John Alden, a passenger on the Mayflower.
Van Dyke attended Danville High School, where he participated in the a cappella choir and the drama club. His involvement in theater sparked his interest in pursuing a career in entertainment, though he also considered a path in the ministry. In his senior year of high school, Van Dyke left school to join the United States Army Air Forces for pilot training during World War II. Despite being initially rejected for being underweight, he was eventually accepted to serve as a radio announcer before transferring to the Special Services, where he entertained troops in the continental United States. Van Dyke was discharged in 1946, and later received his high school diploma in 2004.
