Early Career
Born in East Melbourne to American parents, Exum began his basketball journey with the Keilor Thunder as a junior and also played Australian rules football in school. He attended Thomas Carr College in Melbourne before moving to Canberra to train at the Australian Institute of Sport and later attend Lake Ginninderra Secondary College. He played for Lake Ginninderra in the 2013 Australian National High School Basketball Championships, where they won the title.
In April 2013, Exum participated in the Nike Hoop Summit, playing for the World Select Team. He scored 16 points, grabbed three rebounds, and tallied two assists in a 112–98 victory over the USA Junior Select Team. By October 2013, Exum had completed high school in Australia and decided against enrolling in college to pursue a professional career. In January 2014, Exum signed with Landmark Sports agents and declared for the 2014 NBA Draft.
Professional Career
Exum was selected by the Utah Jazz with the fifth overall pick in the 2014 NBA Draft. He made his NBA debut on October 29, 2014, scoring five points in 9½ minutes during a 104–93 loss to the Houston Rockets. On January 22, 2015, he had a career-high 15 points, including five 3-pointers, in a 101–99 win against the Milwaukee Bucks. Then, on April 1, 2015, he posted a career-high 12 assists in a 98–84 victory over the Denver Nuggets. Exum played in all 82 games of his rookie season, starting 41 of them. He averaged 4.8 points, 1.6 rebounds, and 2.4 assists per game in 22.2 minutes. He became just the 10th rookie in Jazz history to play all 82 games, with double-digit points in 13 games and leading the team in assists 11 times.
