Born in Newcastle upon Tyne, Hunnam is the son of Jane Bell, a ballet dancer and business owner, and William Hunnam. His grandmother was a portrait artist. Raised primarily by his mother after his parents separated, Hunnam has an older brother, William, and two younger half-brothers, Oliver and Christian, from his mother’s side.
At age 12, after his mother remarried, the family relocated to Melmerby in Cumbria. During his teenage years, Hunnam was active in rugby and frequently got into fights with his classmates. Rather than attend university, he chose to study performing arts at Cumbria College of Art and Design in Carlisle (now part of the University of Cumbria).
