Chael Sonnen born April 3, 1977 is an American former mixed martial artist, MMA analyst, and submission grappling promoter. Sonnen began his MMA career in 1997 and competed in the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), where he became a top contender in both the light heavyweight and middleweight divisions, challenging for the UFC Light Heavyweight and Middleweight Championships.

Chael Sonnen Early Life
Sonnen was born in either Milwaukie or West Linn, Oregon (sources differ) and started wrestling at age nine. He attended West Linn High School, where he was a state runner-up. In 1996, he began boxing with the goal of competing in the UFC after graduating high school.
After high school, Sonnen initially attended Brigham Young University but later transferred to the University of Oregon in Eugene when BYU considered cutting its wrestling program. At Oregon, he earned All-American honors, was a two-time PAC-10 runner-up, won a silver medal at the 2000 Greco-Roman World University Championships, and claimed two Dave Schultz Memorial International Greco-Roman titles. Sonnen graduated in 2001 with a Bachelor of Science degree in sociology.
