Early Life and Education

Vorderman was born on Christmas Eve, 24 December 1960, in Bedford, Bedfordshire. She is the youngest of three children born to a Dutch father, Anton Vorderman (1920–2007), and a Welsh mother, Edwina Jean Davies (1928–2017). Her parents separated shortly after her birth, and her mother moved the family back to Prestatyn, Flintshire, North Wales, where Vorderman grew up with her siblings. She did not see her father again until she was 42. After her mother remarried in 1970, they separated ten years later. Vorderman’s father also remarried, but his wife passed away in the early 1990s. She attended Blessed Edward Jones Catholic High School in Rhyl and started studying engineering at Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge, in 1978. She graduated with a third-class degree, which she has described as “disappointing.” Vorderman only discovered her father’s involvement in the Dutch resistance during World War II in 2007.
