High School and College Career

Boozer was a two-time member of the PARADE All-American high school basketball team, leading the Juneau-Douglas Crimson Bears to back-to-back state titles. He received offers from top colleges, including St. John’s and UCLA, but chose to play for coach Mike Krzyzewski at Duke University, where he helped the team win the 2001 NCAA Championship. During the 2001–02 season, Boozer, along with Jason Williams and Mike Dunleavy Jr., each scored over 600 points for the season—a feat that Duke had not seen since the 2009–10 season with players like Jon Scheyer, Kyle Singler, and Nolan Smith. In April 2002, Boozer declared for the NBA Draft, foregoing his final year of college eligibility. On September 16, 2020, Boozer completed his academic journey by earning a bachelor’s degree from Duke University’s Trinity College of Arts and Sciences.

Professional Career

Boozer was selected as the 35th overall pick in the 2002 NBA Draft by the Cleveland Cavaliers. In his rookie season, he averaged 10.0 points and 7.5 rebounds per game. He improved significantly in his second season, posting 15.5 points and 11.4 rebounds per game. After the 2003–04 season, the Cavaliers had the option of either allowing Boozer to become a restricted free agent or keeping him under contract for one more year at a $695,000 salary. The Cavaliers claimed that they had reached a verbal agreement with Boozer and his agent for a six-year deal worth around $39 million, which Boozer would have signed had they let him out of his current contract.
