Cooper was born on January 5, 1975, in Abington Township, Pennsylvania, near Philadelphia, and grew up in Jenkintown and Rydal. His mother, Gloria, worked at KYW-TV, then Philadelphia’s NBC affiliate, while his father, Charles, was a stockbroker for Merrill Lynch. Cooper’s father is of Irish descent, and his mother has Italian roots from Abruzzo and Naples. Raised Catholic, he has an older sister named Holly. He dealt with health issues early in life, including cholesteatoma in his ear and a punctured eardrum from diving. Describing his childhood, Cooper noted that he was not regarded as conventionally attractive, often mistaken for a girl due to his long hair as a child. He excelled in basketball and had a passion for cooking, often preparing meals for friends. Initially interested in attending Valley Forge Military Academy.
Although his parents initially hoped he would pursue a career in finance, they changed their minds after witnessing his performance as Joseph Merrick.
