Bala initially studied engineering (B.Tech) before switching to a Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA), during which he began his acting career. Bala Kumar is a devout follower of Lord Shiva. He married singer Amrutha Suresh, known from Idea Star Singer, on August 27, 2010, and they had a daughter in September 2012. The couple divorced in 2019 after four years of separation. On September 5, 2021, he married doctor Elizabeth Udayan, but they later revealed they were living separately. On October 22, 2025, Bala married Kokila, a relative.
