Babita Kumari Early Life
Babita was born in Balali, a village in Charkhi Dadri district, Haryana, into a wrestling family. Her father, Mahavir Singh Phogat, a former wrestler and recipient of India’s prestigious Dronacharya Award, played a crucial role in coaching her and her elder sister Geeta Phogat from a young age. Geeta became the first Indian woman to win a gold medal in wrestling at the 2010 Commonwealth Games.
Babita’s extended family includes several accomplished wrestlers. Her cousin, Vinesh Phogat, won gold in the 48 kg category at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, while her younger sister Ritu Phogat has also won gold at the 2016 Commonwealth Wrestling Championship. Another sister, Sangita Phogat, is also a wrestler. The Phogat family has been instrumental in changing societal attitudes towards women in sports, especially in Haryana, where traditional gender norms have often restricted female participation in sports. In June 2019, Babita announced her engagement to fellow wrestler Vivek Suhag, and the two were married later that year in November. The couple welcomed their first child, a baby boy, on January 11, 2021.
