Early life
Park was born in Glendale, California, and raised in Ann Arbor, Michigan. She is of Korean heritage and a second cousin of actor Justin H. Min. Park began taking piano lessons at the age of five after enrolling in dancing courses at the Oceanside dancing Academy when she was three. Park’s passion for performing prompted her to participate in Ann Arbor’s community children’s theatre throughout middle and high school. She attended the Interlochen Summer Arts Camp in 2003. Park attended Pioneer High School, where she was involved in both theatre and chorus. She co-founded Soulfege, a women’s a cappella group at Pioneer High School that finished second in a national competition in 2009.
Park was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia in her second year of high school, at the age of 15, and spent eight months in the hospital. Park received a “wish” from the Make-A-Wish Foundation, and she and her family traveled to New York City to see Broadway musicals of A Chorus Line, The Lion King, Spring Awakening, and Wicked. In interviews, she has claimed, “My cancer experience, I believe, is the reason I perform theater… As soon as I got out of the hospital, I wanted to be around people. After treatment, Park returned to high school, and three months later, she was cast as Millie Dillmount in Thoroughly Modern Millie.
