Arijit Singh was born on 25 April 1987 in Jiaganj, Murshidabad, West Bengal. His father, Kakkar Singh, is a Punjabi Sikh, and his mother, Aditi Singh, was a Bengali Hindu. His paternal family migrated from Lahore during the Partition of India. Singh was exposed to music early in life. His family had a rich musical background—his maternal aunt was trained in Indian classical music, his grandmother was a singer, his uncle played the tabla, and his mother also sang and played the instrument. He attended Raja Bijay Singh High School and later studied at Sripat Singh College, affiliated with the University of Kalyani. Although he was a good student, music always took precedence in his life.
Recognizing his passion, his parents arranged for professional training. He studied Indian classical music under Rajendra Prasad Hazari, learned tabla from Dhirendra Prasad Hazari, and was trained in Rabindra Sangeet and pop music by Birendra Prasad Hazari. He began training under the Hazari brothers at the age of three and earned a government scholarship for vocal training in Indian classical music by the age of nine.
