Iguodala was born in Springfield, Illinois, to Linda Shanklin, with an African-American mother and a Nigerian father. His older brother, Frank, played college basketball at Lake Land College and Dayton. Growing up in Illinois, Iguodala was an avid Chicago Bulls fan and looked up to Michael Jordan as his basketball idol.
Iguodala attended Lanphier High School in Springfield, where he excelled both academically and athletically. He earned All-Conference academic honors and was frequently named to the National Honor Roll. He also participated in track, earning three varsity letters in the high jump.
