Early life
On April 29, 1970, Andre Agassi was born in Las Vegas, Nevada, to Elizabeth “Betty” Agassi (née Dudley) and Emmanuel “Mike” Agassi (Aghassian). His mother was from a Jacksonville, Illinois, Unitarian family, while his father was an Armenian born in Iran who worked as a casino employee and was formerly an amateur boxer. After courting for two months, his parents got married in 1959 and relocated from Chicago to Las Vegas. Rita (who was married to former world tennis champion Pancho Gonzales), Philip, and Tami are his three elder siblings. After the American-Armenian businessman Kirk Kerkorian, Andre was given the middle name Kirk. In 1963, while working as a server at Tropicana Las Vegas, Emmanuel Agassi made friends with Kerkorian, his employer.
In 1982, Agassi won the National Indoor Boys 14s Doubles Championship in Chicago, along with his good friend and doubles partner, Roddy Parks, at the age of twelve. Agassi writes in his book Open about special moments and kid-friendly mischief with Roddy.
