Alex Ferns is the oldest of three children in his family, who left Scotland for South Africa when he was eleven years old. The family relocated to Secunda, where Ferns’ father worked as an electrician on a power plant construction project. After finishing school, he joined the South African Defence Force and fought in Angola between 1987 and 1989. He later went on to study drama at the University of Cape Town. In the mid-1990s, he returned to the United Kingdom and started his career. Ferns first appeared in The Ghost and the Darkness (1996) before moving on to several television roles, notably Trevor Morgan in the BBC serial opera EastEnders from 2000 to 2002, for which he won the British serial Award for Best Newcomer.
