Born in Stoke-on-Trent, Adrian Lewis demonstrated his potential early by winning the 2003 British Teenage Open at the age of 18. He initially competed in British Darts Organisation (BDO) events but participated in only one major— the 2003 Winmau World Masters—where he was eliminated in the last 128. He soon transitioned to the Professional Darts Corporation (PDC), never having qualified for the BDO World Championship.
In 2004, Lewis reached the semi-finals of the regional qualifiers for the UK Open, earning him his first televised match at the main event in Bolton. He narrowly lost 7–8 to Dennis Harbour in the last 64. His next televised appearance came later that year at the Las Vegas Desert Classic, where he faced his mentor Phil Taylor and exited in the first round. He claimed his first televised win at the 2004 World Grand Prix by defeating former world champion Richie Burnett, though he was later beaten by Gary Welding.
