Shemar Moore was born in Oakland, California, to Marilyn Wilson, a teacher with a background in mathematics, and Sherrod Moore. His father is African-American, and his mother, originally from the Roxbury neighborhood in Boston, is of Irish and French-Canadian descent. His maternal grandmother was from Quebec City, Canada.
As a child, Moore lived abroad due to his mother’s teaching career. The family first moved to Denmark shortly after his birth, then to Bahrain when he was four years old, where he attended a British private school until age seven. His mother chose to raise him overseas in part to avoid the racial tensions and taboos surrounding interracial relationships in 1970s America. They returned to the U.S. in 1977, initially settling in Chico, California, and later moving to Palo Alto. Moore attended The Nueva School in Hillsborough and graduated from Gunn High School in Palo Alto.
