Early Life and Education

Koy was born to an American father, John C. Herbert, who served in the U.S. Air Force and was stationed in Japan when he married Koy’s Filipina mother, Josie Harrison. His stepfather, Fredrick Harrison, also played a significant role in his upbringing. Koy’s family moved from Spanaway, Washington, to Tacoma, Washington, where he initially attended Spanaway Lake High School before transferring to Foss High School. After graduating, the family relocated to Las Vegas to be closer to Koy’s ailing grandmother.

He enrolled at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, but dropped out to pursue a career in stand-up comedy. Koy has shared that his stage name was inspired by a childhood nickname. According to Koy, in 1989, while discussing stage names with his cousin, his aunt called him to dinner, shouting “Jo Ko, eat!” The phrase “Jo Ko” means “my Jo” in Tagalog.
