Jofra Archer Achievements

Born and raised in Barbados, Archer initially struggled to find opportunities in the Caribbean. Despite showing great promise in school cricket and earning a spot in the West Indies U19 setup, he was left out of the U19 World Cup and couldn’t break into the Barbados domestic side. Fortunately, his British passport—thanks to his English father—and support from fellow Barbadian-turned-England-international Chris Jordan helped him make the move to England.

Early Life

Jofra Archer was born on 1 April 1995 in Bridgetown, Barbados. His father, Frank Archer, is English, while his mother, Joelle Waithe, is Barbadian. Thanks to his father, Archer holds British citizenship. He moved to England in 2015, but under the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) rules at the time, he wasn’t initially eligible to represent England until the winter of 2022. This was because he had moved after turning 18, meaning a seven-year residency was required. Although Archer had represented the West Indies Under-19 team three times in 2014, he expressed a desire to play for England. In November 2018, the ECB revised its eligibility rules, reducing the residency requirement from seven years to three in order to align with ICC guidelines, which made Archer eligible to play for England much sooner.
