At the age of nine, Starc began playing cricket for Northern Districts as a wicket keeper. He played cricket for Homebush Boys High School’s first-grade cricket squad and was a representative player for the Northern Districts Cricket Association. In addition, he played junior cricket for Sydney’s Berala Sports Cricket Club, where he had a reputation for bowling and keeping wickets in the same innings. For the 2008–09 summer season, Starc was under contract as a rookie with New South Wales. In February 2009, he was added to the team to take Aaron Bird’s spot after Bird’s suspension for using an improper bowling motion. On March 5, 2009, he made his first-class debut in the season-ending game for New South Wales.
International career
Starc was selected as a late substitute for the injured Josh Hazlewood on Australia’s tour of India in late 2010, thanks to his outstanding performances throughout the 2010 winter. During this trip, on October 20, 2010, Starc played in his first international match, a One Day International (ODI) against India. He was without a wicket and did not bat. Later in the summer, in the last game of Australia’s three-match series against Sri Lanka, Starc participated in his second One-Day International. After winning the first two games of the series, Sri Lanka had already secured their first-ever series victory in Australia. Australia won by eight wickets thanks to the combined nine wickets taken by Starc and fellow fast bowler Clint McKay during Sri Lanka’s innings.
Early domestic career
Starc has been signed to play for several Indian Premier League (IPL) teams over his cricket career; however, he has missed more seasons than he has played because of injuries and his obligations to the Australian national side. He joined Kolkata Knight Riders in a record-breaking transfer, becoming Royal Challengers Bangalore and Kolkata Knight Riders the only two teams he has ever played for as of 2025.
For the 2014 Indian Premier League, Starc inked a contract with the Royal Challengers Bangalore in 2014. Against Kings XI Punjab, Starc dismissed Glen Maxwell and Wriddhiman Saha with two diving catches close to the boundary. Unlike most Australian cricketers, Starc took these catches with his fingertips pointing down rather than up.

Controversies | • Altercation with Kieron Pollard in the 2014 IPL On 6 May 2014, during a game where Mitchell Starc was playing for RCB against Mumbai Indians, he and Kieron Pollard got into a fight. This happened after Starc bowled a fast ball that Pollard missed. When Pollard stepped back as Starc was about to bowl again, Starc still threw the ball towards Pollard’s leg. Pollard then acted as if he would throw his bat at Starc. Because of this, both players were fined part of their game money (Starc 75% and Pollard 50%) and faced charges for breaking the IPL’s rules.• Warned by the ICC In January 2015, the International Cricket Council (ICC) told him off for celebrating too much when he got Murali Vijay out. Starc yelled in Vijay’s face to celebrate, a Level 1 offence of the ICC’s behavior rules.• Fined for throwing ball at New Zealand tailender Craig In 2015, he lost 50% of his match fee as a fine because he threw a ball at Craig, a player from New Zealand, during the first Test match against New Zealand.
