Early years and Personal life

Born into a Punjabi Jat Sikh family, Yuvraj Singh was the son of Yograj Singh, a former cricket player for India, and Shabnam Singh. During his childhood, Yuvraj’s favorite sports were tennis and roller skating, and he excelled at both. The National Under-14 Roller Skating Championship had also been won by him. His father tossed the gold away and advised him to focus on cricket instead of skating. Every day, he would take Yuvraj to his training.Singh attended Chandigarh’s DAV Public School. He graduated with a degree in commerce from Punjab University, Chandigarh’s DAV College. Additionally, he played two brief child star roles in Putt Sardara and Mehndi Sagna Di.

Singh proposed to British actress Hazel Keech on November 12, 2015, and the two wed on November 30, 2016. On January 25, 2022, the couple gave birth to their first child, a boy they named Orion. On August 25, 2023, a daughter called Aura, their second child, was born.

Career

At the age of thirteen years and eleven months, Yuvraj made his debut for the Punjab Under-16s against the Jammu and Kashmir-16s in November of the 1995–96 season. Yuvraj was elevated to the Punjab Under-19 team in 1996–1997 and faced the Himachal Pradesh Under-19 team with a score of 137 not out. Against Odisha in the 1997–98 Ranji Trophy, Yuvraj made his first-class debut in late 1997; however, he was removed for a duck in the first innings. Yuvraj made his debut at the Under-19 Cooch Behar Trophy Final in 1999 at Jamshedpur, where he batted at three for Punjab and scored 358 runs, while Bihar was all out with a score of 357. In February 1999, Yuvraj played for India against the Sri Lanka Under-19 team in India.

Yuvraj was called up to the national side and named Player of the Tournament for his all-around performance in the 2000 Under-19 Cricket World Cup, which India won under the captaincy of Muhammad Kaif. In the competition, he scored 68 off 62 and 4/36 against New Zealand in a group stage match, and in the semifinal, he scorched 58 off 25 balls against Australia. Later, in 2000, Yuvraj was chosen for the National Cricket Academy’s inaugural cricketer intake in Bengaluru.

T20 franchise cricket

For Punjab Kings of the Indian Premier League (IPL), Yuvraj served as captain and icon player for the first two seasons. In the third season (2010), however, Kumar Sangakkara was named captain in place of Yuvraj. Although Punjab Kings finished second in the tournament’s round robin, they were defeated by Chennai Super Kings in the semifinals. In a match against Royal Challengers Bengaluru on May 1, 2009, at Kingsmead in Durban—the same field where he struck his six sixes—Yuvraj recorded his maiden T20 cricket hat-trick. He fired Jacques Kallis, Mark Boucher, and Robin Uthappa. At the Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg on May 17, 2009, Yuvraj scored his second Twenty20 hat-trick against the Deccan Chargers. Andrew Symonds, Venugopal Rao, and Herschelle Gibbs were all fired by Yuvraj.

For the 2011 Indian Premier League, a new team was added: the Pune Warriors India. The team selected Yuvraj Singh as their captain after purchasing him. The only team to finish higher than Pune Warriors was Delhi Capitals. Yuvraj scored 343 runs at an average of 34.30 from 14 matches, including two half-centuries, while also taking 11 wickets. Following much debate, the BCCI permitted Pune Warriors to locate Yuvraj’s replacement for the 2012 Indian Premier League, citing the player’s health and inability to play in the 2012 IPL as justifications.

Playing style

Although Yuvraj’s primary stroke of attack is left-handed, he can also bowl occasionally with left-arm orthodox spin, a skill he developed in his later years. He views the Indian Oil Cup of 2005 as a turning point in his career and is thought to be a better hitter against fast bowling than spin bowling. One of the Indian team’s most athletic fielders, Yuvraj mainly fields at point and covers with good aim at the stumps. Yuvraj’s strike rate of over 150 in T20 internationals and just around 90 in ODIs indicates that he is an aggressive player with a natural stroke. Many consider him to be one of the ball’s cleanest strikers, and his signature punch through the covers is a delight to watch.
