Before entering the NBA, he played college basketball for the Kentucky Wildcats. A native of Dallas, Texas, Maxey played shooting guard for South Garland High School, leading the team to its first-ever appearance in the Texas state high school basketball tournament in 2018. Recognized as a five-star recruit by his sophomore year, Maxey considered skipping his senior year to join the Kentucky Wildcats but ultimately stayed at South Garland, where he was named a McDonald’s All-American and Texas Mr. Basketball in his final year. Maxey’s freshman season at Kentucky was cut short by the COVID-19 pandemic, and he decided to enter the 2020 NBA draft. The Philadelphia 76ers selected him 21st overall with their first-round pick. Although Maxey’s rookie season saw limited playing time, he made his first NBA start during a game where the 76ers were short-handed. When Ben Simmons refused to play for the 76ers in the following season, Maxey was given the chance to become the team’s starting point guard. Tyrese Maxey was born on November 4, 2000, in Dallas, Texas, to Denyse and Tyrone Maxey. His father, a former college basketball player for the Washington State Cougars under coach Kelvin Sampson, later became a coach himself. Growing up, Maxey’s favorite player was Dwyane Wade, and when he expressed a desire to emulate Wade, his father created a personalized training plan inspired by video analysis of NBA stars Stephen Curry and Kyrie Irving. In sixth grade, Maxey helped his Amateur Athletic Association (AAU) team win a national championship. Despite breaking his pinky finger during the AAU city championship in Garland, Texas, he chose to finish the game by dribbling with his uninjured hand.
At South Garland High School, Maxey played shooting guard for the Colonels. During his sophomore year, he averaged 23.5 points, 5.5 rebounds, 3.6 assists, and 2.5 steals per game. In his junior season, he averaged 22.5 points, 7 rebounds, 3.1 assists, and 2.3 steals per game, leading South Garland to its first-ever appearance in the Texas state basketball tournament. Maxey scored 46 points in the state championship semifinals, but the team lost in overtime to Obra D. Tompkins High School. Maxey considered skipping his senior year to enter the NBA draft but chose to stay in high school to achieve his goal of becoming a McDonald’s All-American. As a senior, he averaged 21.8 points, 6.3 rebounds, and 3.6 assists per game. In addition to graduating at the top of his class, Maxey earned First-Team All-Area honors, was named a McDonald’s All-American, and received the title of Texas Mr. Basketball. South Garland advanced to the 2019 Texas 6A Region II tournament finals, where Maxey scored 25 points in a 64–53 loss to Klein Forest High School.
