He is the sixth child of Joseph Jackson, a steel mill worker who also performed in an R&B band called The Falcons with his brother Luther, and Katherine Jackson, a devout Jehovah’s Witness and accomplished musician who played the piano, cello, and clarinet. Marlon was born about a year and a half before his younger brother Michael Jackson (August 29, 1958 – June 25, 2009).
The two shared a particularly close bond, which Marlon attributed in part to the loss of his twin brother Brandon, who died shortly after birth. Marlon has described himself and Michael as the “jokers of the family,” highlighting their playful relationship. In 1964, Marlon and Michael joined their older brothers Jackie, Tito, and Jermaine to form what would become the Jackson 5. Their mother Katherine supported the group musically by singing harmonies, while their father Joe oversaw their rehearsals, keeping the brothers focused and out of trouble.
