Early Life and Education
Carol Creighton Burnett was born on April 26, 1933, at Nix Hospital in San Antonio, Texas. She was the daughter of Ina Louise (née Creighton), a publicity writer for movie studios, and Joseph Thomas Burnett, who worked as a movie theater manager. Her maternal grandparents were William Henry Creighton (1873–1918) and Mabel Eudora “Mae” Jones (1885–1967). After her parents divorced in the late 1930s, both relocated separately to Hollywood. Carol moved there as well, living with her grandmother in a one-room apartment near her mother in a poor neighborhood. She was raised alongside her younger half-sister, Chrissie, in a boarding house.
As a second grader, Burnett briefly created an imaginary twin sister named Karen, complete with Shirley Temple-style dimples. To sell the illusion, she would quickly change clothes and run in and out of the building using both the front door and the fire escape to convince others that Karen existed. Eventually, the act became too exhausting, and the imaginary sibling “disappeared.
