That same year, she started reporting for KYW radio and KYW-TV, the NBC affiliate in Philadelphia at the time. In 1976, she moved to Washington, D.C., joining CBS affiliate WTOP. Mitchell was raised in a Jewish family in New Rochelle, New York. Her parents were Cecile Mitchell, an administrator at the New York Institute of Technology in Manhattan, and Sydney Mitchell, a businessman who served as CEO and part-owner of a Manhattan furniture manufacturing company, and president of Beth El Synagogue in New Rochelle for 40 years. The family’s original surname was Metchik, and they are of Russian-Jewish descent.
Her brother, Arthur Mitchell, and his wife Nancy relocated to British Columbia in the 1970s. Arthur later became a dual citizen of the U.S. and Canada and served as a member of the Legislative Assembly of Yukon and leader of the Yukon Liberal Party in the 2000s. Mitchell graduated from New Rochelle High School and earned a Bachelor of Arts in English literature from the University of Pennsylvania in 1967.
