James Hetfield was born in Downey, California, to Cynthia Bassett (née Nourse), a light opera singer, and Virgil Lee Hetfield, a truck driver. He has English, German, Irish, and Scottish ancestry. Raised in a strict Christian Science household, Hetfield and his siblings were taught to avoid medical treatment due to religious beliefs—a philosophy his parents adhered to even as his mother battled cancer. She passed away in 1980 when Hetfield was just 16. Many of Metallica’s songs, including “Dyers Eve” and “The God That Failed,” were inspired by these early life experiences.
