Borrego was born on November 12, 1977, in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and is of Mexican American heritage. He played college basketball for three seasons with the San Diego Toreros. During his senior year (2000–01), he was honored by being named to the West Coast Conference All-Academic Team.

Coaching Career

James Borrego began his coaching journey at his alma mater, the University of San Diego, serving as an assistant coach from 2001 to 2003. During this period, the Toreros won the West Coast Conference Championship and earned a spot in the NCAA Tournament for the 2002–2003 season. Borrego transitioned to professional basketball, joining the San Antonio Spurs as an assistant video coordinator before being promoted to assistant coach. Over seven seasons with the Spurs, he was part of two NBA championship-winning teams in 2005 and 2007. He then followed former Spurs assistant Monty Williams to the New Orleans Hornets, where he served from 2010 to 2012.

Following that, Borrego became the lead assistant coach under Jacque Vaughn for the Orlando Magic. After Vaughn was dismissed on February 5, 2015, Borrego took over as interim head coach.
