Born in Los Angeles, California, Young attended Hamilton High School, Dorsey High School, and Cleveland High School in the Reseda area. As a senior at Cleveland in 2004, he averaged 27.2 points and 10.8 rebounds per game, earning first-team honors in the CIF L.A. City Section, the Los Angeles Times All-City team, and the San Fernando Valley. That year, he shot 57.3% from the field and 46.8% from beyond the arc (52-of-111), while also recording 48 steals and 41 blocks, helping Cleveland finish with a 25–4 record.
Young was ranked the seventh-best player nationally by HoopScoop and included among the Top 50 recruits in 2004 by prep basketball expert Frank Burlison. Notably, he scored 56 points in one game and grabbed 23 rebounds in another. He received CIF L.A. City Section first-team honors in 2003 as well and was listed among the Top Seniors by Athlon Sports entering the 2004 season.
