Gia is the only daughter of film producer Gian-Carlo Coppola and Jacqui de la Fontaine. Tragically, her father passed away in a boating accident before she was born. Her grandfather, Francis Ford Coppola, dedicated his 1996 film Jack to her, including the tribute “for Gia ‘When you see a shooting star…’” in the credits. her mother married Peter Getty, son of philanthropist Gordon Getty, making him Gia’s stepfather until their separation in 2009. She split her childhood between Los Angeles and the Coppola family’s vineyard estate in Napa Valley.
Spending much of her upbringing around film sets, Gia was immersed in the industry from an early age, often present during the productions of her aunt Sofia Coppola’s films. She later contributed as a staff assistant in the costume department for Sofia’s Somewhere, and served as a creative consultant on her grandfather’s Twixt.
