Early Life
Franklin grew up in Oakland, California, raised by his mother, Paulette Franklin, after the separation from his father, Donald Ray Franklin. He has two brothers, Donald Ray and David Brandon. Following his parents’ separation, Franklin’s mother moved with her three sons into her parents’ home. Tragically, his father passed away from a heart attack at the age of 36. In the absence of his father, Franklin was brought up by what he describes as a “coalition” of strong women — his mother, grandmother, and seven aunts — who played an instrumental role in shaping his character and values.
In a heartfelt 2016 Mother’s Day essay, he shared how this group of women became the foundation of his upbringing, offering unwavering support and guidance. Though positive male role models like his grandfather and pastor were present, it was the strength and unity of these nine women — his “village” — that profoundly influenced his development into adulthood.
