Louis Theroux was born in Singapore on 20 May 1970 to an English mother, Anne (née Castle), and an American father, Paul Theroux, a celebrated travel writer and novelist. His paternal grandmother, Anne Dittami, was an Italian-American grammar school teacher, and his grandfather, Albert Eugène Theroux, was a French-Canadian salesman for the American Leather Oak company. Theroux holds dual citizenship in the UK and the US. He comes from a highly literary family: his uncles Alexander and Peter Theroux are both writers, his brother Marcel Theroux is a journalist and broadcaster, and his cousin Justin Theroux is a well-known actor and screenwriter.

At the age of one, Louis moved with his family to England and was raised in the Catford area of south London. He began his education at primary school and later attended Tower House School in East Sheen, followed by Westminster School near Westminster Abbey. There, he formed friendships with future comedians Adam Buxton and Joe Cornish.
