She then completed a postgraduate diploma in radio and TV journalism at Preston Polytechnic (now the University of Central Lancashire). Victoria has shared that her father, Anthony, was physically abusive towards her, her mother, and her siblings.

When Victoria was 16, her mother left with the children, and Victoria never saw her father again. She discussed these experiences during a Panorama episode on domestic abuse during lockdown, which she presented in August 2020. At 17, she worked a summer job in a furniture factory, which she later described as the worst job she ever had.

Career

Victoria Derbyshire began her broadcasting career as a reporter for BBC CWR before moving to BBC GMR Radio. She joined BBC Radio 5 Live in 1998, initially filling in for Jane Garvey on the breakfast show. When Garvey left, Derbyshire became the regular co-presenter alongside Julian Worricker. Their show earned Gold Sony Awards in both 1998 and 2002. After Worricker’s departure in January 2003, she was joined by Nicky Campbell. Following a period of maternity leave, Derbyshire returned in August 2004 to host the station’s morning news program.

Throughout her time at 5 Live, she reported on major global and national events, including the 9/11 attacks, the Paris Concorde crash, general elections, and the Olympic Games. On television, she has provided coverage of key news events such as the Grenfell Tower fire and the Manchester Arena bombing. Derbyshire made headlines when she interviewed her own BBC Radio 5 Live boss about his decision not to relocate to MediaCityUK in Salford, where the station was moving later that year.
