Jean Todt was born in Pierrefort, a village in the southern Cantal region of Auvergne, France. After finishing high school, he studied economics and business at the École des Cadres in Paris. Todt developed a passion for motorsport early on, admiring drivers like Jim Clark and Dan Gurney. Using his parents’ Mini Cooper, he entered rallies and discovered his strengths as a co-driver. He began co-driving with Guy Chasseuil in 1966, quickly gaining a reputation for his skills in calculation, strategy, and organization.
By 1969, he was working alongside top rally drivers including Jean-Pierre Nicolas, Rauno Aaltonen, Ove Andersson, Hannu Mikkola, and Guy Fréquelin. Throughout his co-driving career, he partnered with several prominent drivers such as Jean-François Piot, Ove Andersson, Achim Warmbold, Jean Guichet, Hannu Mikkola, Jean-Claude Lefèbvre, Timo Mäkinen, Jean-Pierre Nicolas, and Guy Fréquelin. In 1981, Todt, co-driving for Guy Fréquelin at Talbot (a Peugeot subsidiary), won the Manufacturers’ World Rally Championship and finished as runner-up in the Drivers’ Championship.
