He ultimately left college in 1972 and returned to Providence, where he formed a band called The Artistics in 1973 with fellow RISD student Chris Frantz. After the group disbanded in May 1974, Byrne moved to New York City. Frantz and his girlfriend, Tina Weymouth, soon followed. In 1975, the trio formed Talking Heads, becoming a prominent part of the 1970s punk and New Wave music scene.

David Byrne was born on May 14, 1952, in Dumbarton, Dunbartonshire, Scotland,[2][3] as the elder of two children to Tom Byrne (originally from Lambhill, Glasgow) and Emma Byrne. His mother was Presbyterian and his father Catholic. The family moved to Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, when David was two years old, partly due to a lack of engineering jobs in Scotland and partly because of familial tensions stemming from his parents’ interfaith marriage.
Around the age of eight or nine, the family relocated again—this time to Arbutus, Maryland, in the United States. There, his father worked as an electronics engineer at Westinghouse Electric Corporation, and his mother later became a teacher.[4][5] Byrne initially spoke with a Scottish accent but gradually adopted an American one to better fit in at school.
